The Declaration of Independence
Brutus No. 1While today, most Americans are united in the belief that the Constitution limits the power of government and protects citizens from tyrannical and arbitrary government, it was not love at first sight for everyone who read the Constitution immediately after the Philadelphia Convention. Opponents of the proposed Constitution, known as Antifederalists, began publishing essays explaining their objections to its ratification. One of the better known Antifederalists wrote several letters under the pseudonym, Brutus, in which he argued that the proposed Constitution would undermine the federal and republican nature of the government as it had existed under the Articles of Confederation.
