Greek Philosophy
The Love of Wisdom

OH, SOCRATES!  This unit is a rite of passage for everyone who passes through my humanities curriculum - possibly the most intellectually demanding - and the most rewarding - unit in this course.  We begin this unit with a discussion of the Greek sophists and Plato's Allegory of the Cave before moving on to the heart of the unit:  the controversies surrounding the trial and death of Socrates.  Our primary readings in this unit include Aristophanes' play, The Clouds, as well as Plato's Euthyphro, Apology, and Crito.

Philosophy and the Sophists

These are videos of an in-class lecture/discussion on philosophy and the Greek sophists.  The first video is a discussion of knowledge and power and how the quest for each distinguishes the true philosopher from the sophist.  In the second video, I introduce the Greek sophists and the "Three R's" of the sophists (relativism, rhetoric, and recompense).

Plato, The Apology

I have abridged a public domain version of Plato's Apology for use with high school students.  In the Apology, Socrates gives his defense (apologia) in response to the charges brought against him my Meletus and Anytus.

Plato, Crito

I have abridged a public domain version of Plato's Crito for use with high school students.  The Crito, set in Socrates' prison where he awaits his execution, focuses on themes of justice, honor, and fear of death.
