During the last quarter of the nineteenth century, the United States completed its transition from an agrarian federal republic to an industrial powerhouse. Entrepreneurs such as Rockefeller, Carnegie, and Vanderbilt generated an unprecedented amount of wealth, but even as the economy grew, the problem of poverty continued to haunt the urban and rural dispossessed.
